A useful Linux utility I've come across recently is checkinstall. It replaces the 'make install' portion of a source code build of a library and creates a 'package' for all the steps the 'make install' would have done. This package can be a Slackware, Debian or Red Hat style package. This allows the uninstall of the package at a later date. Traditionally once a 'make install' has been done it's been difficult to back out those changes when you want to remove the items unless the library designer explicitly put in a 'make uninstall' which isn't very common. 2:12:27 AM
